Literary Analysis Of The Hate U Give

On August 28, 2018, Roy Oliver a former Texas white police officer found guilty of the shooting of a 15 year-old unarmed black boy Jordan Edwards. Angie Thomas’s novel “The Love U Give” depicts Starr Carter (16) as a black 16-year-old girl attending a Williamson school with a majority of white students and living in Garden Heights. After witnessing her childhood bestie, Khalil being shot and killed, she finds herself lost in darkness. After the grand jurors decide that the officer is not to be punished, she finally decided to speak out for herself and the public. Thomas shows how accepting oneself in a judgemental situation can make them stand up and have an impact. Angie Thomas shows in the story Starr’s desire to separate her personalities and two lives after Khalil passed away. Starr was afraid of being judged by her white friends after witnessing Khalil’s murder. She feared standing out among them and being judged. Starr realized she had to separate Williamson from Garden Heights. Kenya brought up that Starr, at one point, was ashamed of Garden Heights. She pushed her friends further away because she kept a big part of her life secret. Hailey, Starr’s friend made many racial jokes about Maya and Starr. Starr was initially unable to understand the jokes. They became more offensive and included racial remarks and stereotypical statements regarding Khalil. Starr was forced to defend herself before Williamson, and she began a physical battle with Hailey. Hailey claims that “he was a drugs dealer and a criminal.” Somebody was gonna murder him eventually .”(…) Starr’s “other” personality is now showing at Williamson. Starr’s elder brother, Seven, began to drag Chris, DeVante and Starr towards Garden Heights. His car soon ran out gas after being stopped numerous times. Starr became angry and frustrated that Khalil had not received justice. She joined the group in Garden Heights, Just Us Justice, to protest. I shout into the bullhorn, “My first name is Starr. Khalil was my friend. I saw the incident.” (…)I look at the police. “I can’t stand it!” We think of you the same way. (…) The life of Khalil Starr was important. Khalil was important.” Starr has evolved and changed in a remarkable way. Starr is not the same closed off and “two personality” Starr that she used to be. Starr’s realization that her words were connected after Khalil was murdered and Hailey came into the picture made her realize how much worse everything would be if they were kept apart. Starr had a huge impact on the minds of many people at the riot, even though the police were violent and fought them back.

Accepting and standing up to oneself can have a profound impact on a community. Every child learns to make life-changing decisions today and tomorrow. In society, we are a stereotyped group of people who prevent important voices from being heard. One person said: “Stand for what’s right, even if it means standing alone.” Do not let anyone step on the truth.
